With the release of a new poll commissioned by the Military Culture Coalition, largely undiscussed issues and perspectives in the debate over the attempt to repeal the law on gays in the military have emerged. Contrary to past polls that gauged respondents' "feelings" about gays in the military, the MCC poll finds that Americans support keeping the current law. The Military Culture Coalition, a project of the Center for Military Readiness, unveiled a new website this week, www.militaryculturecoalition.com, highlighting its poll of likely voters on the issue of repealing the current law on gays in the military. Defense Department officials should learn a lesson from the uproar that ensued when gay activists "outed" and denounced the official survey of troops on the issue of homosexuals in the military. Jumping the gun on congressional action to repeal the 1993 law that is usually mislabeled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the Pentagon is circulating a professionally prepared survey asking 400,000 active duty, reserve, and guard personnel what they think about ways that military life would change if the law is repealed.
